March marks the beginning of spring in Crete, though it's a gradual transition. The weather in March is quite variable, but overall temperatures continue to rise. Average daytime highs reach about 17–18 °C (63–64 °F) and lows are around 10–11 °C (50–52 °F). Many days, especially in late March, feel pleasantly cool-warm, perfect for outdoor exploration. You'll still get some chilly winds and the odd cold spell, but the sun's appearance becomes more frequent with approximately 6 hours of sunshine daily. March sees further reduced rainfall – roughly 50 mm over about 6 days, so while you should expect a few showers, there are plenty of dry days. When it rains, it's often in short bursts, with blue skies following soon after.

Crete's landscape comes alive in March. After the winter rains, the hills and valleys are lush green and wildflowers start blooming everywhere, creating beautiful scenery for drives and hikes. You might spot red poppies, yellow daisies, and purple anemones carpeting fields and olive groves. Snow still lingers on the mountaintops, offering a striking contrast on clear days – you can sometimes be hiking in a t-shirt at lower elevation while looking up at snowy peaks. The sea temperature is still on the cool side (~16 °C / 61 °F), so only the “first daring swimmers” venture into the water now. (Indeed, by late March you'll see a few people testing the waters on warmer days, especially on calm south coast beaches, though most will wait until it warms up more.)

Practical tips: March is a fantastic month for hiking and sightseeing. Trails are green, waterfalls have plenty of water, and the temperatures are comfortable for long walks. Just be prepared for mixed weather – pack both a light jacket and some t-shirts, as well as a waterproof windbreaker for any rain or windy days. Popular hiking spots such as the Samaria Gorge are still closed (they typically open in May), but there are many shorter walks available. Many seasonal businesses, including cafes and local restaurants, begin to reopen towards late March, especially around the Easter period if it falls early. With longer daylight, you have more time each day to explore. Keep in mind Greek Independence Day on March 25 is a national holiday – you might catch parades in the towns. Overall, March offers a refreshing and rejuvenating time in Crete, with spring's beauty emerging and generally mild, if sometimes unpredictable, weather.
