June in Crete heralds the official start of summer, and the weather leaves little doubt about that. By June, the island is basking in sunshine for more than 12 hours a day and rain is virtually nonexistent. You can expect hot, sunny days with average highs around 27–28 °C (81–82 °F) and lows around 19–20 °C (66–68 °F). Often by late June, afternoon temperatures creep over 30 °C (86 °F) in inland areas, though coastal breezes keep the seaside a bit more moderate. Rainfall is rare – statistically, Crete sees almost no rain in June – and the summer dry season has fully set in, so the landscapes in lowlands begin to turn from green to the tawny brown typical of Mediterranean summers.

It's beach time for sure – the phrase “Sunny and hot. Time for the beach!” sums up June in Crete perfectly. The sea has warmed up nicely, averaging about 22 °C (72 °F) by mid to late June, which is comfortably swimmable for most people. From early morning until sunset, beaches all over the island are now in use. Popular spots may start to get busy, but June is still just before the absolute peak tourist rush of July–August, so you'll find plenty of space to enjoy the sand and sea. The north coast might begin to feel the Meltemi winds on some afternoons as the month progresses, but generally the breeze is pleasant and tempering the heat. When these winds do blow, they can make the sea a bit choppy, which is perfect for windsurfers.

Practical tips: Pack your summer wardrobe – think shorts, light shirts, sundresses, swimsuits, and sandals. Don't forget sunscreen, a sunhat, and sunglasses to protect against the strong UV rays around the solstice. While heavy clothing isn't necessary, having one light sweater or long-sleeve for an occasional cooler evening is wise. June is also the time for boat trips to destinations such as Balos Lagoon or even an excursion to Chrissi Island, so plan ahead for those activities. The interior trails are dry by now, perfect for exploring spots like the Lasithi Plateau.
