You might sip raki at a beach bar like Baraki, known for its relaxed vibe and cocktails, or enjoy live music at a hotel lounge. If you want late-night clubs, bustling Hersonissos is a 10-minute taxi ride away – allowing Gouves to keep its calmer character.

The best time to visit is late spring or early autumn when the weather is warm and the crowds thinner, in August it can be busy and quite hot. Finally, don't be shy to venture into Pano Gouves in the evening. One of my most authentic experiences was joining a tiny kafeneion's impromptu lyra music night, proof that even in a resort area, Cretan culture thrives if you know where to look.
