Historical & Cultural Overview
Georgioupolis is a serene resort town about 38 km east of Chania, known for its lush river delta and expansive sandy bay. Interestingly, it wasn't always so idyllic, in the 19th century this area was a malarial swamp called Almyroupoli (after the Almyros River). In the late 1890s, Prince George of Greece drained the marshes and planted eucalyptus trees, founding the village and giving it his name. Georgioupolis literally means “George's Town,” honoring the prince who served as high commissioner of Crete in its last Ottoman years. The grand eucalyptus avenue at the town's entrance still stands, a living relic of that era. Today's Georgioupolis retains a laid-back, friendly vibe. Fishermen cast lines off the bridges, and horse-drawn carriages trot tourists around the square in summer. The mix of river, sea, and countryside gives it a unique charm, where else can you stroll from a beach to watch turtles in a river within minutes?
Top Things To Do
The star attraction is Georgioupolis Beach, a 9-km stretch of soft sand extending east all the way to Kavros. It's fantastic for long beach walks, swimming, and even horseback riding at sunset (local stables offer beach rides). For postcard views, walk the stone causeway to Agios Nikolaos Chapel – this tiny white chapel sits offshore and offers a divine panorama of the bay (wear sandals or water shoes, as waves often lap over the walkway!). Nature lovers should explore the Almyros River, a short path by the harbour leads you to where it meets the sea, a spot where ducks, fish, and sometimes turtles gather in brackish waters. A boat tour on the river can be very scenic, especially in spring when wildflowers bloom on its banks. Don't miss a trip to Lake Kournas (5 km away), Crete's only freshwater lake, where you can paddleboat or just enjoy lakeside tavernas, it's a popular excursion by the little tourist train that runs from the town square. In town, the square itself is lovely for people-watching under the shade of eucalyptus trees, and kids love the playground there. Feeling adventurous, arrange a jeep safari into the nearby foothills or a guided hike through Kournas Gorge.

Insider Tips
Georgioupolis has two small rivers (Almyros and Perastikos), where they enter the sea the water can be chilly even in summer (freshwater springs!). You'll see locals tend to swim a bit farther along the beach away from these spots for warmer waters. If you like birdwatching, head to the Almyros estuary at dawn, egrets and herons often feed there. The town square comes alive on summer evenings with a small pop-up market, great for picking up local honey, spices, or handmade soaps. Speaking of honey, try sfakiani pita at Kali Kardia taverna, it's a local cheese-honey crepe that's divine.
Public Transit
KTEL buses between Chania and Rethymno stop on the main highway junction (1 km outside town), many visitors don't realise this and get off too early. Look for the small “bus stop” sign near the bridge on the highway. If you're driving, fill up on fuel in Georgioupolis before exploring the interior, gas stations are sparse in the backcountry. Finally, treat yourself to a quirky snapshot with the old red British phone booth that inexplicably adorns the town center, a fun, odd relic beloved by Instagrammers.
Where to Stay – Luxury, Mid-range & Budget
Georgioupolis caters to all budgets. Luxury seekers often choose Anemos Luxury Grand Resort, a sprawling 5-star resort with multiple pools and an organised beach area. Another upscale option is Pilot Beach Resort, famous for its bungalow-style rooms and lush gardens. For mid-range, Corissia Beach Hotel and its sister Corissia Princess Hotel offer 4-star comfort just steps from the sea, with guests raving about the breakfast and rooftop bar. Georgioupolis Beach Hotel is a solid 3-star choice with a rooftop bar. Budget travellers will find plenty of family-run accommodations, Kokalas Resort (studios with kitchenettes and a pool) consistently wins praise for value. There's also Fereniki Resort, often with competitive rates, but read recent reviews as it's a larger complex with mixed feedback. Many guests enjoy renting villas or apartments in the countryside towards Vamos or Exopoli for a quieter stay with mountain views while being 5 minutes from the beach.
Practical Info
Getting There: This is a great stop between Chania and Rethymno, by car it's a 35-min drive from Chania, 20 min from Rethymno. Direct buses from both run frequently (more in summer).
Amenities: Georgioupolis has supermarkets, ATMs, car rentals, a post office, and even a doctor's office. You'll find everything you need within a few blocks. In summer, there's usually a tourist mini-train that shuttles to Lake Kournas and nearby attractions, a hit with families.
Climate: Expect a lovely breeze thanks to the meeting of sea and rivers, even on hot days it feels a tad cooler here. Pack mosquito repellent if you visit in spring, those river areas can attract a few. The beach is well-organised with lifeguards, and shallow areas make it kid-friendly (just mind those river mouths).
Personal Anecdote
One afternoon I rented a bicycle and rode out of Georgioupolis with no fixed plan. I followed a dirt track along the river and found myself in a different world, cows grazing under olive trees, the distant tinkle of goat bells. I ended up at a tiny family-run winery (had no idea it existed!) where the owner, Stelios, was bottling that season's muscat. He invited me in, dusted off a glass, and poured a taste. There I was, in sweaty bike gear, sipping fragrant sweet wine in a rustic cellar. We clinked glasses to toast Crete, and though we came from different backgrounds, the warmth in his eyes said it all. It's these unscripted moments, a mix of nature, culture, and kindness, that make Georgioupolis more than just a pretty beach stop.
